Honkey Tonk Humor and Introspective Ballads submitted by Meginator on July 14, 2019, 5:52pm Gretchen Wilson is at her best on the upbeat honky-tonk numbers that focus on her excellent, gently self-ribbing sense of humor, but she is surprisingly effective on the ballads as well. Defiant yet sensitive and willing to expose some of her deeper emotional core, Wilson especially excels on the songs she writes for herself, which make up the majority of the track list here. Musically, the album offers a nice balance of country tradition and pop-infused evolution, with a slight dip in energy in the midsection that gives way to a rousing, personal tribute to Wilson’s hometown. Come for the party, and stay for the surprising introspection that comes afterward.
