Same Problem, Different Class submitted by pkooger on October 6, 2010, 8:59am This story follows Maurice, a middle class Englishman who falls in love with his upper class schoolmate, Clive, despite his society's strict repression of same-sex attraction. Following the public trial and conviction on "immorality" charges of a friend, Clive dumps Maurice, marries, and starts a life of complete respectability. Maurice meets Alec, a lower class man, and starts a relationship with him.

I liked this film because it was fascinating to see the workings of such codified layers of social status, and to see each of the characters struggling to make their own human nature fit into their social expectations. Good performances, beautiful filming locations and a heart-breaking story make this one of my favorite films this year.
