Based on a true story about 73-year-old Alvin Straight who embarks on a dangerous and emotional journey to make amends with his 75-year-old brother Lyle before his brother dies. Alvin can no longer drive a car because of his eyesight and has to walk with 2 canes, but he climbs aboard his 1966 John Deere lawnmower and drives the 260-mile course from Laurens, Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wis.

Charming submitted by kimberlina on July 26, 2012, 9:05am This is a charming movie about an elderly man hoping to find peace with his estranged brother. The story moves slowly accompanied by beautiful scenery and music. There are several touching scenes where Alvin quietly shares his life's wisdom with the people he meets along the journey. Worth watching.

A very pleasant surprise, excellent movie! submitted by Tassos on March 27, 2021, 10:52am When I read the synopsis of this movie I was afraid it would be a real boring flick, where very little happens.

Actually it was not. I am typing this as it is approaching its end.

The movie is excellent. Maybe it helps that it is based on a true story, and that the lead actor has many similarities with the real deal he is portraying.

The dialogues are convincing 99% of the time, and the musical score is very discreet and just right, unlike the bloody violins, trumpets and the obnoxious and meaningless 'vocalizations' in most other movies.
