Cheesy, But It Holds Up submitted by Meginator on August 12, 2020, 5:21pm This film embodies almost every cheesy 1950s science fiction cliché in the best possible way, given that it is actually from the era and, indeed, influenced many subsequent films; the exception is in its (predictably questionable) treatment of the primary female character, but for the time and the genre it isn’t too bad. Though obviously dated, the special effects and soundtrack have a great retro-futuristic vibe that complement the story quote well, and the story itself explores themes that feel relevant today, albeit in slightly different guises. A few plot developments even surprised me, as I was expecting the story to go in another direction entirely. Altogether I was pleasantly surprised by this film’s subtlety and its plot developments (and the reasoning behind them), and I think it stands the test of time fairly well.
