COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not impressed submitted by mmckenzie on August 13, 2015, 3:29pm I totally disagree with the blurb on the book's cover -- perhaps they used the same publisher and that individual HAD to write for this book.

The book was ok, but reminded me why I prefer to read this genre of books written by women authors. While the book is supposed to be written from the main character's perspective, it is not. It is very evident in a few areas, which I won't specify, as that's giving away part of the plot.

I also did NOT like how the author described it when the main character, Maggie, cried when she was upset, sad, etc. He wrote, 'blubbered', repeatedly. I do not think this is how Maggie would have thought of her crying, as she is supposed to be a classy woman.

Another issue I have is with the word choices. I think the author must have used his thesarus repeatedly. He has unnecessarily chosen many VERY obscure words. I have an excellent vocabulary and knew all of the meanings of this word choices, including most of the food descriptions, and some of the antiques/collectibles.

However, I did not know these obscure words, nor could I find them in my biggest dictionary. (I started thinking he made them up, but did a search and found them all online.) Felt like he was picking the most unused words from a spelling bee contest.
It took away from the story line to keep breaking to look up the words. At first I didn't, but then it got to me and I began to look up the words. Here are some examples: meretricious, deliquescing, ensanguined, priapic, and eponymous.

And last, he took a weird diversion at the end and started getting philosophical in the past few pages, and in the epilogue. Not in sync with the rest of the book. Badly written, too. The epilogue rushed to fill in all the open items in a few pages. I feel like the editors told him to shorten up the book and this is where he put all the loose ends.
