Lesbian Romance submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 22, 2013, 9:42pm Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Waters, this British TV mini-series details the life and loves of Nancy "Nan" Astley who leaves her small-town family for a life on the stage as a male impersonator and singer. The TV series stays mostly true to the novel and the few deviations do not take away from the central plot and characterization.
Nan has more than one relationship with women during her adventures in Victorian London and the director shows it on screen, so it would probably be rated "R" if it were in American theaters. The series is also very historically accurate, including its depiction of upper-class lesbian culture of the 19th century.
Nan hits rock bottom several times, so there are some very sad parts to the book, but hang in there until the end, as it will be well worth it! The costumes alone are gorgeous.

good historical novel with contemporary sensibility submitted by lisa on July 26, 2018, 12:39pm It's got some juicy stuff in it, too.
