This, in its own terrifying way, is a love story. That's one of the original taglines for the film, anyway. The Days of Wine and Roses (1962) could be the companion film for The Lost Weekend (1945) when you plan your "films about alcoholics" movie night. However, in contrast to The Lost Weekend, The Days of Wine and Roses really IS a love story. And both are excellent films, but I prefer this one because of Jack Lemmon.
Joe (Lemmon) and Kirsten (Remick) seem doomed from the start. Joe, already a functioning alcoholic, pulls Kirsten into world that was previously unknown to her. Together, the two enable each other, and become more and more dependent on alcohol - until the two transition from "functioning" to "non-functioning". The film is comparable to watching a slow downward spiral, and Lemmon and Remick are terrific. In 1963, Lemmon was nominated for Best Actor for the film and Remick was nominated for Best Actress.
My favorite scene involves Jack Lemmon tearing apart a greenhouse to find a bottle of liquor that he hid in a flowerpot. (He forgot where he put it.)
