What a unique story. The pairing of a man whose life has no purpose and a young man who is facing a crisis of conscience.
Pacino’s character of a military man blinded in a military maneuver, embittered and lost, is a tough cookie to play, especially paired with his attractions to women (particularly by their smell) and a tenderness he feels when a woman treats him as desirable..
The boy’s sincere presence when Pacino choreographs a final trip to New York City, and how each gives the other the hard truths they need to hear. Both men come to the aid of the other in life changing ways. One more moment that I don’t forget: the blind Pacino takes a young woman on an empty dance floor and gives her a tender tango. Music plays over it: Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love.”
Great, if not one hour too long, and an AWESOME performance by Al Pacino, 30 years old now but still strong.

I had seen this on TV in the 90s or 2000s, and saw it uncut on DVD today. Almost 3 hours long, some critics said it should be an hour shorter. Good movie, but Great performance by Al Pacino especially.
PS this is not an original 1998 movie, but a REMAKE, in a sense, of another movie with exactly the same title, made in Italy in 1974. I really would like to see it but AAPL does not have its DVD.
Pacino is amazing submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on July 10, 2023, 7:32am While I agreed with many that Pacino should have won his Oscar for Godfather 1 or 2, or Dog Day Afternoon, there is no denying that he gives an incredible performance in this. The tango scene is a classic.
