Quite entertaining but poorly written submitted by marielle on June 26, 2011, 12:43pm I loved the old McKinley books, so when McKinley fans told me I had to read this one, I got it out of the library the next day.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but the writing was pretty disappointing. The main character's inner monologue is long and rambling and she repeats the exact same thoughts over and over again. That may be a realistic depiction of one's inner monologue, but I really don't need to read the same thing ten times.

With some editing though, this could have been a great book. I found the main character likable and believable, and it's nice to see a "normal" girl in the spotlight and a vampire that isn't a Don Juan.

Just Desserts submitted by hduke on June 17, 2015, 4:08pm After Twilight came out I thought I was 100% anti-vampire-books, but after reading all of Robin McKinley's other works I figured I should at least give this one a try, and I am so glad I did. Sunshine is one of my comfort books now, something I pull off the shelf whenever I want something comforting in its familiarity, and yet it still manages to immerse me in the story every time I read it. The story revolves around the eponymous heroine who, one day while out at the lake gets kidnapped by a vampire gang before managing to escape with their other hostage - a vampire who had a long-running feud with said vampire gang. Desserts get baked (Sunshine is a baker, after all), alliances are forged, and vampires get their just desserts. All in all, I highly recommend Sunshine.

Awesome submitted by www.net on June 20, 2017, 9:15am I've liked everything I've read by Robin McKinley, and this is one of my favorite books by any author. I have re-read it as often as the Harry Potter books.

Beautiful tension at every level submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 21, 2018, 12:08am This might be the first vampire story I've ever read, and if that's really the case, I can probably stop here, because they might not get much better.

_Sunshine_ starts out with a dozen pages of slightly-rebel girl in any town working at any diner living pretty much any life, and then slowly drops a couple of hints... her brother wants to work in Other law, things haven't been the same since the Voodoo Wars, etc. One evening Sunshine (Rae's nickname) goes for a drive to get some space and suddenly we're full-on into it, wherein she is captured by vampires, dressed in a gown, and shackled to a wall in an abandoned house opposite another vampire... who seems not to want to dine on her, despite the fact that he is starving. The story is beautifully written, creative, and there's not a sparkle anywhere. (I haven't read or watched Twilight, and even I know what happens in it!) The bad guys really are Other, with a capital O... not just humans with an angsty emotional twist. There is conflict within each character, conflict between individuals (in lots of combinations), and conflict between the main pair and the world. The tension works at every level, and that's what makes this book... well, shine.

Highly recommended.

Vampires? submitted by SolaireFQ on August 11, 2018, 7:59pm I'might not a vampire fan but I do love Robin McKinley so I had to give this book a try. Totally worth the read.
