Underrated and Holds Up Over Time submitted by Meginator on July 1, 2018, 9:58pm The first thing I noticed upon re-watching this film for the first time in several years is how well the animation stands up; sure, Pixar’s more recent films are more richly detailed, but the decision to introduce cartoonish elements to the natural world works well for this film’s visual style and the studio's technological capabilities at the time. Elsewhere, A Bug’s Life offers a textbook example of Pixar’s hallmark narrative style and its trademark mix of humor and heart. Misfit Flik is immediately endearing, as are his newfound circus companions and his supporters at home, and his hero’s journey fills in the familiar beats with enough tweaks to keep things interesting. The fundamental story of the power of new ideas and cooperation rings true, and can connect with kids and adults alike. This film is quite underrated, perhaps only because Pixar’s usual quality is so unbelievably high, and it definitely deserves its place among the studio’s other hits.
