Begone dull care submitted by answer-beat on April 2, 2023, 1:51pm Before checking this out I think I was expecting something like Stan Brakhage -- something I greatly appreciate but still find challenging and can't always get into. This is absolutely nothing like that. These are incredibly fun animations that anyone can enjoy. McLaren pioneered too many techniques to name, and it's fascinating both to see these early works and watch the documentary and find out about how he created them. Also so much of this is way ahead of its time, from early music videos (essentially) to graphics that essentially look like video games or other digital art, but were made around the '40s-'60s and often weren't even produced using cameras, but drawn/etched directly onto film. Mosaic is basically the film equivalent of microsound (Ryoji Ikeda, etc.) but it was made in 1965!
