The Real John Smith & Pocahantas submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 12:04pm The real story of John Smith is way more interesting than the Disney one - he was a slave in Turkey for a year (captured while a mercenary soldier) before coming to Jamestown in 1607. While trading and skirmishing with the Powhatan Confederacy and the gentleman colonists at Jamestown, he was stung by a stingray and almost died, then severely wounded when a bag of gunpowder was torched while it was hanging from his waist.

After going back to England, Smith became more of a writer (his work had already been published without his consent), and he named New England in a 1614-15 journey - after which he was captured by French pirates and escaped when their ship foundered in a storm.

The mistakes the colony government made at Jamestown are staggering. The story of Powhatan and Pocahontas is fascinating. The narrative gets a little slow in some parts, but is mostly engaging and easier to read than your average history.
