Pete saves up change by doing chores for his parents, selling some of his baseball cards, and getting his allowance-- all so he can buy a new dinosaur toy.
Billed as a math book that will help children learn to count change, You Can't Buy a Dinosaur with a Dime falls short. Rather than having readers count money pictured in the illustrations, it instead poses questions like "How much money do you have in your bank?" and "How much is your allowance?" which leaves out the readers who do not have spending money. Haley's cartoon watercolor illustrations are basic, yet adorable, however, they are not enough to balance out the roughly written unmetered rhyming stanzas.
