COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Very unusual approach. submitted by GJBarnett2 on August 17, 2014, 3:58pm Part memoir, part novel, part graphic novel, but the content is amazing, the story of a concentration camp survivor. For all ages.

Incredible submitted by kelleyc on July 30, 2016, 8:16am This was an amazing book about a Holocaust survivor. Obviously it's done in a completely unique way, and it was really touching and painful and wonderful.

Astounding submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2017, 8:33am I expected this graphic memoir to be good, but I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. Maus is more than a Holocaust story: it's also an examination of memory, of relationships, and of the weight of history across generations. The art is surprisingly effective, with several haunting images in particular that are no less effective for portraying mice instead of humans. This book is a testament to the power of comics and proof that good storytelling and thematic depth are not limited to certain genres. It's a remarkable achievement and I expect that it will stay in my mind for a long time.

powerful and moving submitted by camelsamba on July 20, 2017, 10:06pm Powerful and moving Holocaust memoir, in graphic novel format. This edition combines the first and second books, which allows you to see how Spiegelman's style has changed over time.

Excellent submitted by AGAPHD on June 20, 2020, 10:15pm A modern classic for a reason. A powerful history and family story. I was particularly impressed with the way Spiegelman captures his father's language.

amazing submitted by .-.-.-. on June 11, 2022, 9:40am Not just a holocaust novel, but much more than that. Made me feel a bit sad, but an amazing book to read. 5/5 stars.

Incredible submitted by amandasaurus on June 19, 2022, 1:25am I had never been one for graphic novels, but this is actually the perfect medium for the story that’s being presented. The cat/mouse metaphor somehow makes it both easier to understand but also more of a punch in the gut almost. Everyone everywhere should be reading this.

If anything should be required reading, it's this. submitted by journeyhawthorne on August 7, 2022, 12:39pm Maus makes the horrors of the Holocaust understandable and very real. An incredible graphic memoir that serves a dual purpose in educating generations about an unspeakable time while also proving that graphic novels absolutely count as books for reading.

Deeply Moving submitted by mknappe on July 13, 2023, 2:26pm An incredibly well-written and illustrated memoir of the author's father's time in the holocaust. I was really moved by how recent these events where and how they continue to effect our world today.
