Excellent submitted by Brad B. on December 9, 2010, 4:39pm If you’re a Terry Pratchett fan and you’re wondering if writing for teens has changed his work, have no fear. The same tradmark wit is here, as he's not one to talk down -or "write down"- to children. And, if you’re a firstcomer to Pratchett, this is an excellent place to start. I found this book hillarious and clever and just as good as some of his best books for adults. Great for fantasy fans who enjoy witty dialogue.

An excellent read-aloud submitted by cherylo on July 7, 2011, 9:36pm I read this to my then-seven-year-old daughter aloud, and we had such a good time! The cadences of the Nac Mag Feegle really shine through as written. Regardless of whether you share it with someone you love or read it by yourself, this book is funny, touching, wise and wonderful. The Tiffany Aching series, of which this is the first, rest among my favorite stories ever.

my beloved diskworld submitted by ferdoble on August 11, 2011, 3:48pm To describe Terry Pratchett’s books is a difficult thing to do. The disc world series is in a word fantastic. Terry Pratchett, would seem to use the disk world, to take any theme, or know story and then twist it in his own very humorous way. These are not always laugh out loud funny (sometimes they are), bur rather the sort of funny that just sort of lifts your spirits a little bit.

I will say that in some cases there isn’t always a really strong story, sometimes its just his characters moving through one of those twisted themes. I like them all, you may want to start with the Most Von Lipwig story line (“Going Postal” and then “making money”) as at least the first one has a really great story line.

I love to pepper my reading queue with these books to keep all those books that take themselves seriously fresh and interesting.

I recommend reading them ALL.

OR listening to them. The two main narrators of Terry Pratchett’s books are Stephen Briggs & Nigel Planer and they take Terry Pratchett’s phenomenal writing to a whole new level.

Great! submitted by alumeng.ajl on July 30, 2012, 5:11pm This is such a great fantasy book!

Tiffany Aching rocks submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 11, 2012, 6:52pm "Wee Free Men" is the first of the Tiffany Aching novels, part of Sir Terry Pratchett's larger and much beloved Discworld series (and if you don't already love them, I highly recommend these books). Tiffany is a young teen who learns she has magical talent and meets the mischief-making Nac Mac Feegles, who are small, blue pictsies (as they call themselves, not pixies).
We meet some characters from other Discworld books, including Granny Weatherwax. Those who have read "Equal Rites" and "Wyrd Sisters" will have a better understanding of what the Discworld is in general and who the witches in particular are, and so will better appreciate "Wee Free Men." After this novel, we continue Tiffany's adventures in "A Hat Full of Sky," then "Wintersmith."
Unlike some Young Adult fantasy novels, the Tiffany Aching books feature a strong, independent teenage woman who does not fall in love or base her life's decisions on what some man thinks is best for her.

For all ages submitted by Allison B on June 26, 2013, 5:56pm If you haven't read any Pratchett, you're missing out. Ditto on his youth selections. His voice and humor is there in full force.

Great female protagonist, strong and smart.

One of my favorite books submitted by audreyh on June 15, 2015, 2:07pm The Tiffany Aching books are, to my mind, Pratchett at his best. These books are a joy to read, and Tiffany is a great character. Pratchett doesn't talk down to his teenage audience at all. I can't recommend this book--or any of Pratchett's works--highly enough. Everyone should read a Pratchett book. He just has such a great sense of humor, and tackles big issues with grace. Pratchett makes the work of growing up seem both worthwhile and valuable.

magical stories submitted by camelsamba on August 27, 2016, 1:00pm For a variety of reasons (including failure to get past the first chapter of one of his books), I resisted Terry Pratchett books for many years. Then one day I started listening to this title on CD during a long car drive, and I was hooked. Actually, it took a few chapters for me to get hooked - but I was a captive audience so stuck with it. The world Pratchett has created for Tiffany Aching is so fascinating, and the reader of the series is wonderful. So if you have always wondered what all the fuss is about, start here. If you have a hard time reading it yourself, switch to an audiobook and see if you don't fall for Tiffany, the wee free men, and Terry Pratchett himself. Expect to continue this series through all four books, as Tiffany matures and learns how to be a witch to her people.

Great Book submitted by sushai on August 26, 2018, 6:28pm Strong female lead with an endearing and hilarious supporting cast. Loved this book, as an adult!

wee free men submitted by qmomo on June 27, 2019, 9:27pm i've been working my way through the discworld books and this is my favorite so far! compelling and moving blend of humor, wisdom, and idiosyncratic twists on classic fantasy elements.

Better than Harry Potter submitted by BurntSaori on July 6, 2020, 10:51am Not trying to start a fight, but these books are just better. If you have a child who likes adventure and fantasy, or who finished Harry Potter and want something else, I highly recommend.

Fun For All submitted by Fairyologist on July 11, 2020, 6:46pm This series, following Tiffany Aching (and The Wee Free Men) is wonderful! I began reading these at an "advanced" age (in my 50's!) and really loved them. Pratchett was (sadly he has passed) brilliant with characters, language and world building. There is much adventure and humor within.

Amazing, lovely, brave and funny for parents and kids alike submitted by AngelaA2 on August 14, 2020, 9:16pm There is NOTHING to describe Terry Pratchett - but I will do my best - Dry British humor and lessons about humanity and morality wrapped up in a fantasy plot - and the WOMEN - wow, believable, complex, human and SMART. Tiffany Aching is a HERO - she is amazing and brave and not without her faults.

Do yourself a favor and look up "Recommended Reading Order" on the interwebs - AND find the sub-plot you like. TIFFANY ACHING is a subplot of the Witches series - but this series was written for children. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Delightful submitted by lvpratt on July 2, 2023, 7:55pm Wonderful for kids and adults. In terms of age range, this is a book I'd give to any kid with the literary skills to enjoy reading it. Do be aware that later books in the series (in particular "I Shall Wear Midnight") touch on some of Pratchett's heaviest themes (abuse, assault, pregnancy loss, etc.). So if your younger reader gets into this series, it might be something worth previewing or having a conversation before they get to that book.

for all ages someone wrote - and i completely agree submitted by katarina on August 9, 2023, 9:55pm great heroine, the wee free men are wonderful sidekicks and of course the writing is full of humor and insight!

don’t pass this one by because of the teen fiction category!
