COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A Singular Vocal Talent submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:18pm Janis Joplin’s talent is a singular one, and all of her performances are characterized by raw emotion that drives the music forward and creates an all-encompassing wall of feeling. The first tracks, performed with Big Brother and the Holding Company, add a blues inflection to mainstream early 1960s rock; Joplin's inimitable style sets these songs apart, giving them a unique sense of life. Her later work feels more directly connected to the blues, but with a raspy rock and roll edge that can feel ahead of its time. Joplin absolutely bares her soul with every single line she sings, and this collection offers an excellent introduction to her all-too-short career.

The only down side here is the anthology aspect. submitted by lisa on July 22, 2020, 4:24pm It's richer and more, uh, like, coherent to listen to her songs in the clusters they came out in originally. But most folks aren't going to do that, and anyhow this collection is a great introduction OR reminiscence.
