A Well Kept Secret

So, first of all, let me just say something. You know "storylaura? The librarian and storyteller at the downtown library? Well, this is *the same* Laura!
Anyway, when my mom got this from the library, I thought, "Oh, whatever. My younger siblings will enjoy this," thinking it would be a recording of the kinds of stories she tells at storytimes, which, while they are fine stories, are aimed at younger kids then me. But was I wrong! These are stories from her childhood, or about her relations, and I really enjoyed listening to them. My younger siblings also love them - my youngest sister wants to listen to the CD pretty much every day - but the stories are not only for little kids. They are entirely different then the stories she tells at storytimes, but they are just as good for younger children, and much better for older people - kids *and* adults!
So the point of this review is to just tell you that you HAVE to check this out, as well as Laura's other, similar CD the library has, "All Dressed Up".
By the way, apart from having enjoyed Laura's stories on this recording, I also learned some things about her. Would you believe that I never actually knew "storylaura" was Jewish till I listened to her recordings? And that's just one thing I learned about her. Well, enjoy!
Delightful

I was also pleasantly surprised to find this set of stories by our own beloved librarian and storyteller, Laura Raynor. This story set can be found in the youth cd section, but truly enjoyed by anyone. On it, Laura lovingly shares and expertly narrates stories passed down by her own family, from her Grandmother's journey to America as a seventeen year old, to some of her own childhood memories made in Michigan. Listeners indeed discover her family's immigrant history and Jewish culture, from which she chooses her favorite, most cherished stories. While learning interesting bits about her own family, we get wrapped up in moments of life, love, and laughter that we can all see some of ourselves in too.
Laura evokes her relatives' personalities so well, it strikes me that permanently documenting our families' stories with our voices is not only possible, it is a wonderful idea!
Lastly, one of the best parts about finding this CD in the "local artist" section, is that you can find Laura telling stories every week, here at the library. There are surely more once "well kept secrets" to be shared, but if her stories remind you of one of your own, she's likely to be happy to listen, too.
