COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Johnny Cash - American IV submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on July 17, 2016, 2:35am I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, but even so I am constantly vlown away by the strength of his cover songs on this album. He works with a wide range of music. Some of the original songs he covers were ones I'd been very attached to, and I love what he does with them. Particularly noteworthy are "Hurt" and "Personal Jesus" - his versions are unique and powerful. I enjoy them as I do the originals. And as far as I'm concerned, this version of "Desperado" is the definitive one.

The Man Comes Around submitted by Meginator on July 14, 2019, 7:14pm This album is a fitting capstone to Johnny Cash’s legendary, world-changing career and an essential piece of musical Americana. Cash’s trademark raspy vocals and spare instrumentation (often featuring just the man and his guitar) bring a unique perspective to each of the songs he covers here, giving them a deeply reflective, introspective quality that feels like a conscious retrospective on Cash’s career. The focus, as ever with him, is on the lyrics and the stories they contain, and Cash knows just how to play with rhythm and stress patterns to bring out new shades of meaning even in well-known songs. Each becomes, in the process, uniquely his, as much as his own compositions ever are. Johnny Cash is a timeless treasure, and this final album offers a pitch-perfect testament to his legacy.

mixed bag submitted by tisaallen on July 16, 2022, 8:31pm The final album released during Johnny Cash's lifetime is his 4th with producer Rick Rubin featuring cover songs. It works best on the most surprising selections, "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode and falls flat on more predictable choices like "In My Life" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
