COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Ordinary people submitted by leenajong on August 20, 2016, 1:01am Good classic movie

Such repression. Well presented, at least. submitted by lisa on July 12, 2019, 6:57pm Oh my, it musta been hard to be upper middle class, and the woman who was blamed for everything.

Excellent movie, given it was Redford's first directing effort. submitted by Tassos on December 1, 2022, 8:29am THe movie is GREAT if you watch it from the beginning and pay attention and don;t be a damned fool like LISA above who thinks the "woman" (the wife) was "blamed for everything". SHE WAS BLOODY NOT. Everybody was very patient with her as her own son interpreted her utter lack of affection for him as HATE on her part (helped by the fact that the son falsely felt responsible for not saving his older brother's life in a sailing accident). The "woman" is portrayed as an emotional basket case, unable to express her love for her own sole surviving son, whom she never even visited in the Hospital where they cruelly sent him after he tried to kill himself! Her character is sure very rare in real life, at least in my experience, BUT REMEMBER, this is based on a BOOK WRITTEN BY ANOTHER WOMAN, Lisa, so DO NOT give me this "the woman is blamed for everything" BULLSHIT only a birdnrain FANATIC would conclude.

SO, IGNORE Lisa's clueless review, and GO ENJOY THE DAMNED MOVIE! IT IS EXCELLENT. Mary Tyler Moore is outstanding as the wife/mother, as is DOnald Sutherland as the husband, and even Timothy Hutton (what the hell became of him the next 42 years?) as the troubled younger son. Added to the benefits, young ELizabeth McGovern looks really sweet in her role. She's a delight.

Best picture winner submitted by brooksza on July 24, 2023, 12:10pm "I'm fine, how are you" the movie. This is a timeless movie that is dramatic without getting melodramatic (except one phone call to bathroom scene). Really good stuff from Judd Hirsch, he's like a warm blanket in this movie.

This movie gets the waves and permanence of grief.
