Garfield & Friends submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 10:16am This edition of Garfield’s adventures comes from a strong period in the strip’s history, though I’m less of a fan these days of some of the diet-based storylines, which can occasionally veer away from humor and into cruelty. This book includes some great moments between Garfield and the Arbuckle mice, as well as some classic fights and collaborations with Odie; I find that the best Garfield strips are often those that feature the animals working together, both for the humor and for their surprising heart. I’m also a fan of the Pooky storylines, which provide moments of unusual emotional tenderness in a usually irreverent comic strip. This volume also includes plotlines written for the holiday season, which always seems to capture Garfield and his companions at their best. I do wish that more of the weekday installments were built around weekly themes, but the punchlines here are sharp and cover many of Garfield’s finer characteristics.
