The story of Sierra, a young horse who is part of a herd of wild horses led by Shadow, an older stallion. Each chapter begins with reminiscences by Sierra of life in the herd, told by an older and wiser horse. As a young filly, Sierra was fiesty and restless and loved to gallop wherever she could. One day that impulse gets her in serious trouble.
