COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Prepare yourself submitted by sarah fishburn on August 15, 2021, 4:43pm Be forewarned! Child of my Heart is not an easy read if you tend to steer away from uncomfortable subjects! It's incredibly well written and though it's not easy to capture the voices of children and teenagers, McDermott does it remarkably well. She tells this "summer in the life" story of teenage Theresa, an only child of parents who are at work long hours every day and who has an affinity for the younger children and animals in her charge, and an ability to please the adults that comprise her community. There's a good deal of realistic drama regarding some of those adults, their relationships, relationships turned sour, and (among the men) highly inappropriate behavior toward Theresa. It's a fast read, and one though published almost two decades ago, brings front and center both the longings of girls growing into womanhood, and the dilemmas posed in a society that has not proven adept at addressing the multitude of ways in which they are often taken advantage of.
