COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Cricket Leads to Liberation submitted by michrigan on March 16, 2007, 8:59am I never learned so much about the game of cricket without even trying. The movie is so entertaining that you just take in the rules and action of the game as part of the fun. The time period is around the turn of the 19th century with England ruling the villagers with little interest for their needs. The village faces starvation because of the severe tax burden on its crops.
Somehow it works out that the arrogant British magistrate agrees to free the village of its burden if it can defeat the occupiers in a game of cricket. No problem. Except that none of the villagers have ever played cricket.
Throughout the film there are dance scenes with men and women that would put Soul Train to shame. The Indian women are beautiful and the men most handsome and virile. Yet there is an added twist that brings the entire Indian society into question when it seems that the lowest caste "Untouchable" has a strange and quirky ability as a hurler that could help the locals win the match. In spite of this, none of the players or villagers want to allow him to compete. It seems they would rather starve than upset the ancient system of social ranking.
A variety of characters add color to the story which spends over an hour on the match, yet it never gets boring. It gives you an appreciation of this game those in the British empire love, but seems so tedious to the outside world. I mean one game can last for days and one batter can be up for hours and hours.

Amazing Movie submitted by allishaklausch on August 18, 2016, 9:33pm What an amazing movie. The song and dance is amazing, and the plot was quite good. I have to admit, though, I did get a bit lost at the cricket game.

Very good. submitted by rekha on June 24, 2017, 9:41pm Highly recommend.
