The hugely anticipated new novel by the author of "The Secret History" is "an elegant, edifying work of art" ("Entertainment Weekly"). Even more transfixingly suspenseful than its predecessor, this is a dark work of lost childhood, rich in moral paradox, as a 12-year-old Mississippi girl sets out to find her brother's murderer.

The Little Friend submitted by jaegerla on October 13, 2009, 7:03pm Drug addiction, snake handlers, paranoia, and suspicion mix to create a vivid, detailed, intense story. Harriet, a young girl growing up in a small town in Mississippi, is sharp, astute, and unnervingly observant. She ventures out from her sleepy household and sets out to solve the mystery that shattered her family: who murdered her brother ten years ago? This plotline has been attempted in the past. There are plenty of stories where children work as detectives to solve a crime: What Was Lost, the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, etc. The Little Friend is an extremely sophisticated depiction of a young girl _convincingly_ fueled by revenge to solve a crime by spying on the town. Whatever Tartt is working on right now, if it is even half as good as The Little Friend or The Secret History, we're in for a treat.
