COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Funny, and yet serious too submitted by deets on September 27, 2013, 1:09am I did not know what this book was about when beginning, but was led to believe by the review quotes on the cover that it would be "laugh out loud funny". While I thoroughly enjoyed the Book of Fred, laugh out loud funny gives the impression of a much more lighthearted book than this. It is the story of Mary Fred, and the loving yet disfunctional family that fosters her when she is removed from her parents' home. The circumstances pull at the heartstrings of the reader, and raise very deep questions of the role of government and religious freedom in our country. The sympathy shown for Mary Fred also seems to be patronizing at times, when her ability to care for herself shows that who is helping who is not always simple. With the story told from the viewpoints of each of the main characters in turn, The Book of Fred gives you the rare gift of seeing the big picture.
