"In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the moving love stories in American history. This is history on a grand scale--a book about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, John Adams is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived."--Publisher's description

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Long but good submitted by Johnny Mac on July 17, 2011, 1:06pm a very long book that took a long time to read. But interesting facts of early American history.

Excellent submitted by KMLB64 on June 17, 2016, 10:07am Tireless public servant who sacrificed so much for our country while working abroad and at home. Often overshadowed by #1 and #3;
accomplished much on his own as President #2.

Insightful! submitted by thesrays on July 6, 2020, 1:54pm This is my favorite book by the author and I've read nearly all McCullough's books. This reads with the smoothness of a good book of fiction and has the same well-developed characterization. Enjoy!

Intensely thorough, and really good submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 26, 2023, 3:49am This is thorough to the point of being ridiculous (did I really need to know that Adams wore brown broadcloth with plain silver buttons at the knees, and it was the same cloth that Washington used at the same event, but his suit had fancy buttons? Who recorded this, kept it for 250 years, and why did the author decide that my life would be better for it?). I’ve read two other biographies that were like this (Isaacson’s on Steve Jobs and Herman’s Gandhi and Churchill). I think that these immense volumes that go so incredibly deep on a single life are fascinating, great for learning about one person and all that surrounds their life and times… and in the end not really my thing.

McCullough’s research on Adams is thorough, and his writing is compelling. He makes Adams human and interesting, and gives wonderful context to the early colonies and United States. Other major political players (Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Rush) are vibrant, as are Abigail (what a love story!) and their children. I learned an enormous amount, and while it took me a couple of tries to get through the book simply because of its size and because early American history isn’t a big pull for me, the book itself was easy to read and kept me interested. I can see why this won a Pulitzer.
