COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Educational & interesting submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 25, 2013, 11:06am I'm glad I read this, because it was certainly interesting, but it wasn't the best thing I've ever read.

I think what I liked the most was the social perspective of this young and then maturing Black man who was not raised as a Black boy in America. It gives him a very interesting perspective on the role of race and expectations.

What I didn't like is probably more endemic to autobiographies in general. There is always an interesting balance between "there is something special about me" (maybe it's talent, maybe it's determination, maybe it's great social skills... whatever) and "look at this chance I was ready for." Autobiographies are the personal stories of people who yes, had the skills, but who also got lucky. There are an awful lot of people in the world who have all the right/same skills, but never the get right chance. Yet we all want to think that we who have "made it" have done so because of ourselves. I've worked in enough shelters and soup kitchens to know that there are people who try just as hard and never get there. That makes it hard for me, in general, to read stories of people who believe they made their own success.

Nonetheless, Poitier was a pioneer as a Black man in entertainment, and his story is worth reading.
