Translation of : Noruwei no mori.
"This stunning and elegiac novel by the author of the internationally acclaimed Wind-Up Bird Chronicle has sold over 4 million copies in Japan and is now available to American audiences for the first time. It is sure to be a literary event. Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman."-- Cover.

Liked it submitted by marielle on July 8, 2012, 9:48am I enjoyed this novel, but it's not one of Murakami's best. Unlike many of his surrealist books, this one is depressingly grounded in reality. Enjoyable and worth the read if you're a Murakami fan.

No thanks submitted by andybayer on June 25, 2019, 3:38pm Murakami has created a world where the protagonist is free to be sexually exploitative without suffering the consequences. The characters' relationships are complex and tragic, but all ultimately end up simplifying themselves to yield to the book's heavy eroticism. I would not recommend this book because of that.

Great! submitted by jpardo97 on June 25, 2022, 4:38pm Good book! Couldn't put it down.

My favorite submitted by courtneyhooper on August 12, 2022, 11:47pm I love Murakami, and this one is top 3
