It's heart wrenching submitted by Dayoung Nam on August 6, 2011, 6:16pm this book is quite scary book. The heart is start wrench, and I almost cry.

very good submitted by Berryak on June 27, 2014, 7:46am i think the tittle should be the notseys but other than that it was great.

powerful submitted by camelsamba on August 21, 2014, 1:51pm The summary describes the basic plot: "During the Nazi occupation of France, Monique's mother hides a Jewish family in her basement and tries to help them escape to freedom." But what it doesn't tell you is how fierce yet fragile Monique is during the time of war. While the adults are trying to keep life ordinary for the children, they are also resisting the Nazis. The struggle to maintain a sense of normality in a time of war must have been so diffilcult.

Based on true events in her extended family. Beautiful illustrations, as is usual for a Polacco book. One small quibble: the butterflies in the story look like monarchs (Danaus plexippus), but monarchs are a new world species. Although most people won't notice, I wish she would have chosen something more realistic for the setting. It's a wonderful book overall, though. Very powerful.

Incredible submitted by jcottey on August 17, 2019, 8:21pm This is probably my favorite of Polacco's books. Based on the true story of her aunt and great aunt who help a Jewish family hide and escape during the Nazi occupation of France. It's a must read.
