Life is hard.... submitted by duckmeister on June 14, 2021, 11:21am but at least I haven't had to gut a pig today. This book is a raw look into turn-of-the-century mountain life with newlyweds Julie and Hank - and all the twists and horrible turns in their life. I have gone back to this book 3 times and each time I am pulled into life alongside Julie. Yes, she is a woman written by a man, with many of the downsides we know about that, but I found it so interesting how the typical gendered roles were often reversed in their marriage, with Hank taking on the "fragile panicky" role and Julie standing firm.
