Daunting, but well worth the start of a 10 book journey

Gardens of the Moon kicks off the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. It's a an Epic Military Fantasy with DEEP magic, deeper characters who all seem to have PhDs in Philosophy, Gods who take an active part, etc. It throws you into the deep end and DOES NOT HOLD YOUR HAND.
A ton of people bounce off GotM, but if you stick with it, know that you'll eventually get a grip on what's happening and you'll learn about the world organically. You'll fall in love with the characters and just when you think you know what's happening jk you don't and you're not even upset. Because it means you get to learn more later on.
The only negative is that if you dive in and fall in love, no other Fantasy will come close to reaching the heights that the Malazan Book of the Fallen does. You'll also be frustrated by how slow other authors are... this is a COMPLETE, FINISHED series so don't worry.
