COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Great Mid-Century Jazz submitted by Meginator on June 21, 2020, 2:57pm The immediate acoustic impression of this album is of Armstrong’s trumpet blasting clear ahead of the supporting musicians (perhaps an artifact of the original recording technology, perhaps not), and the focus is usually on him. Happily, Armstrong is loud and clear, both behind the trumpet and as a vocalist, his signature gravelly bass anchoring these tracks and giving them a solid foundation in the blues. This is mid-century jazz at its finest, improvisations flowing naturally out of the orchestrated background and playing wonderfully against the vocals. The music has real soulfulness to it, from Armstrong’s signature trumpet style to wailing trombones and other steady background musicians. Armstrong at his finest is incomparable, and this album features one of the finest musicians playing some of the best blues compositions; it’s a can’t-miss proposition and it sure doesn’t.
