Something happens when words go down on paper. submitted by ccrose on August 23, 2019, 3:47pm I’ve given this book to maybe 10 people with the caveat to pass it to another person who is in spirit-pain. It was a pain like no other. An unhealed part. I was afraid of the words that would come out. That I couldn’t stand to make the pain into a real event that truly happened.
The book is written in two sections: preparing to write and writing. It’s not a ‘method’ or a ritual. It’s working with gentleness, to write the words that are terrifying to see on a sheet of paper. I bought my copy in 1995. I know exactly where it is today. I am so grateful that this writer knew what lay ahead. The words help to give memories context, a description of real details, use of metaphor to slowly absorb a truth. The highest compliment I can pay to DeSalvo is that I believe her sincerity in wanting others to grow from our painful experiences. I believe without writing it down, we miss the chance to see the whole ball of wax, not just the moments of harshest pain.
