Highly recommended submitted by ashflowtuff on August 25, 2016, 10:08am A great follow-up to Parable of the Sower. Interesting and powerful story. Butler always writes a depressing a dark future, but populates it with powerful and intriguing characters.

Stellar read submitted by mbertrand on June 25, 2019, 8:58pm I accidently read the second book in the series before the first, but I liked it no less for the mistake. What a great read! And it felt eerily prescient... this is a future that felt increasingly likely. I was thankful for the excellent characters, and the profound tenacity at the core of the book to wrest a future we can live in together out of darkening times.

Frightening parallels to Donald Trump's presidency written in 1998 submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 17, 2020, 8:53pm Octavia Butler is a writing genius (though we all know that by now, right?). She creates stories with worlds, characters, and conflicts that draw a reader in, make a book nearly impossible to put down, and invite reflection on challenging questions that leave me thinking about a book long after I have set it back down. The Parable of the Talents is the sequel to The Parable of the Sower, but they don’t have to be read together. The most terrifying thing about it is that she wrote it in 1998 and it predicts (in truly frightening ways) the election and subsequent presidency of Donald Trump, the rise in hate crimes, the abuses occurring along the US/Mexico border and the ICE raids within the country, and a host of other policy changes that work for the benefit of a few at the cost of the many. It’s easy to read in terms of the writing, and hard to read in terms of the parallels to our country. It also asks challenging questions about the balance between responsibility to justice and responsibility to individuals/family. When we act in ways that power will find threatening, and we know that puts us at risk, are WE the ones who should stop? Why is power not held accountable? Why are the ones working for justice the ones “doing something wrong”?

An utterly brilliant book (and be sure to read the Q&A with the author at the end). I cannot recommend it highly enough.
