Reinterpretating a Master submitted by Meginator on June 22, 2019, 11:16am This compilation consists of reinterpretations of George Gershwin’s music by a range of contemporary jazz and pop musicians. Though these songs are some of the most familiar and most covered in the Great American Songbook, each of these tracks brings something new to the source material; even both versions of “Summertime” are sufficiently different from one another to be individually interesting. Most of these covers fall into the broad spectrum of modern jazz styles, with scattered inflections of pop, funk, and even rap, creating interesting links between Gershwin’s era and our own. As a long-time fan of Gershwin’s music, I’m astonished that musicians can keep finding ways to reinvent his work and I’m always glad to find interesting collections like this one.
