A Good Biography submitted by Jan Wolter on June 22, 2013, 6:12pm There were, sort of, three civil rights movements going at the same time. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X advocating changing "the system" by working outside the system, via civil disobedience or more violent means. Thurgood Marshall was the leader of the movement to change the system by working within the system, an approach that most people thought was impossible. Very likely it took all three to win the battle. This book is a good discussion of Thurgood Marshall's civil rights campaign. It describes first his training as a lawyer, not a simple thing for a black man to achieve at the time. The most interesting part of the book is the description of the civil rights cases he worked on. Many of these required him to travel to Southern towns where justice for blacks was in scarce supply, and his life was in considerable danger. Eventually he won a series of landmark cases before the Supreme Court that collectively completely erased the legal foundation for discrimination. The later sections of the book, which focus on his own service as a supreme court justice are a bit less interesting, since he was largely marginalized as more and more conservative justices were appointed to the court. This is a good balanced treatment of his life, including the bad with the good, and it is certainly an important story in the history of our nation.
