Reaping the Best of Young
Harvest is Neil Young's most popular album, with a rich share of great songs that have aged extremely well over the decades, like Out on the Weekend, Old Man, Heart of Gold, and The Needle and the Damage Done. The rest of the album doesn't suffer from lack of trying though. The orchestra songs, A Man Needs a Maid and There's a World, have unique, challenging phrasings and great melodies, but they sound the kind of dated that was probably sour when it was first released. There is no filler here, just some ideas that didn't work out in the studio.
Young is at his best here in the folk rock vein, when his lyrics are introspective, his hooks catchy, and his melancholy full of both sorrow and hope simultaneously. The hard rocking songs (see Alabama, or Southern Man pt.2) are not his strongest on this record, but I go to On the Beach for that kind of thing from Young.
