Nicely done
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 12, 2018, 1:50pm
A novel in the (new) tradition of Food, Inc., Fast Food Nation, The Omnivoire's Dilemma, and more.
The story was nicely done. The two main characters are interesting, multi-dimensional, and believable. Jane is a young and idealistic Japanese-American woman working on a Japanese documentary show called _My American Wife_, which is really a front for the American meat industry. She struggles to find balance between American and Japanese cultures, between the reality of a paycheck and the idealism of expose documentaries, between a failed first marriage and a new (somewhat odd) relationship. Akiko is the quiet Japanese wife of the Japanese producer, trying to find her place in her life, her home, and her marriage. Their parallel paths and eventual intersection are fascinating.
The meat industry expose isn't new to me, but was well done and gave me a few new perspectives, as well.
I enjoyed the story and the intersection of a good book with my interests in both current food practices and Japanese culture.
Read it! submitted by redwood on August 4, 2019, 12:42pm Laugh-out-loud hilarious, shocking, moving. Ozeki's expose of the meat industry and exploration of US-Japan relations at the new millennium is a great read for anyone.
