"For those needing to hate, her screams and his running were all the excuse necessary." submitted by TeacherN on June 27, 2021, 3:25pm We just marked the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre of 1921. Magic City, published in 1997, is a heart-wrenching imagining of those horrible events. The massacre is believed to have started after a black man, Dick Rowland was accused of assaulting Sarah Page, a white female elevator operator. As the author writes in her Author's Note, "[B]oth Rowland and Sarah Page ... were victimized by yellow journalism that inflamed racial tensions. Ultimately, charges against Dick Rowland were dropped – Sarah Page refused to testify." In this story, instead of Dick and Sarah, the characters are Joe Samuels, a shoeshine boy and son of a successful black banker, and Mary Keane the unmaried daughter of a poor white farmer. Both main characters, as well as supporting characters, are portrayed with loving humanity. Considering this book is written about a terrible event in our country's history, it still manages to feel hopeful. I believe this book will stick with me for a long time.
