COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A Timeless Orchestral Suite submitted by Meginator on July 12, 2020, 5:38pm This version of Holst’s most famous composition feels fairly literal, insofar as it’s an excellent way to become acquainted with “The Planets” but doesn’t hold any surprises or sweeping dramatic gestures. Yet I could sense the conductor’s personal esteem for the music in the delicacy of some of the slower movements, which have a certain warmth to them. “Jupiter” showcases the orchestra’s ability to operate in several different modes, and Charles Dutoit ably leads them through its different moods, even if his version of “Mars” isn’t quite flamboyant enough for my taste. Overall, personal quibbles aside, this is still a superb recording of a fantastic, timeless orchestral work that may surprise you if you’re not usually into this type of music.
