A bit of a chip on their shoulders

The "pre-fab four" reunited in the mid-90s with the apparent goal of finally proving critics wrong about them. The Monkees were assembled by TV execs, it is true. Their talents were written off by many critics even after they began writing and producing their own material later in the run of the show. Some well-publicized feuding amongst themselves and with the show producers did not really help their image. All that is really too bad, because although they were helped and molded in the making of The Monkees TV show, their talents were never an illusion.
This disc has some excellent tracks. Several of the them come off as bitterly angry or otherwise rooted in their past experience of ridicule and scorn. The songs collected here are very much different than those produced for the show, especially the early material, but they are worth listening to even as they shatter any remaining illusions about The Monkees as a group.
