COMMUNITY REVIEWS
An amazing gallop through history submitted by valeriemates on July 20, 2013, 6:13pm I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is written entirely as a series of letters between the characters. The book was Emma Bull's idea: One day she showed up on Steven Brust's doorstep with the first letter of the book, handed it to him, and said, "Here! You don't have to play." -- and then she left. Brust *did* play, by writing back with the second letter of the book -- and the book was born. The two authors collaborated by taking turns writing the letters that make up the book. As far as I know, they didn't edit it afterward, just wrote the letters and that was the book. It's a fascinating romp through 1849, including some real newspaper clippings from the time. Some readers complain that the language is dense, but, me personally, I enjoyed every bit of it.
