Tries too hard to build a foundation
submitted by Daniel Slomovits on August 17, 2019, 12:07am
This book is clearly intended to set the stage for the two sequels, but in doing so I think it weakens itself as a standalone novel. It introduces lots of new bits of worldbuilding—technology, characters, ideas—which seem like jarring and disrespectful departures from canon. Many of them are folded in more elegantly in the sequels—several times I found myself going "oh *that* makes sense"—but here they feel less like mysteries and more like oversights.
I also didn't like the portrayal of Hari and Dors...Hari seemed a little too chessmaster-y, and reminding us "hey! hey! Dors is a robot, remember?" all. the. time. felt a bit excessive. I'm not sure this is intrinsically bad, but it didn't feel well done.
