90s Collage Masterpiece submitted by jibkidder on June 29, 2022, 8:59pm Beck started his slow decline into banality, or his steady ascent into mainstream music, depending on your view, after this record. A real peak for the Dust Bros methods - love what they did on Paul's Boutique - but they meld with Beck's aesthetic more, and this all around was a real refinement of Mellow Gold.

A Musical Mess, But a Confident and Pleasant One submitted by Meginator on June 13, 2023, 11:39pm It is perplexing how Beck manages to craft songs that feel essentially meaningless (and even, at times, completely random) while still being enjoyable, and this album is full of them. The tracks are built on a range of influences from various electronic and rock genres and each has a unique identifying hook that (sometimes barely) holds everything together. In a lot of ways, this album seems to embody some kind of positive nihilism, in which everything is devoid of actual meaning yet still somehow comes together into a pleasant experience. I don’t think this is quite as brilliant as its reputation suggests, but that it is at all listenable, let alone catchy and enjoyable, feels like some kind of minor miracle.
