Live at Seattle submitted by ccrose on August 17, 2019, 2:37pm I’m in the kindergarten level of understanding how jazz works and especially how a group interprets a piece live as opposed to studio where editing can reshape every little thing. This performance was not long before Coltrane died in 67’and maybe the freeform noodling (noodling sounds like it would be soft, cocktail hour stuff; this is violent, frantic. Coltrane played a bubbling up kind of scream ) was just the group taking advantage of three horns (three! All playing fast and frantic). I listened carefully to see if there was a melody. Not in the old-fashioned way, the way a band would come back to the familiar refrain and the audience would feel a sense of relief And let go the long breaths they’d been holding .
I liked the drummer Elvin Jones, who did a lot of fancy rolling like a tsunami, while the horns honked and screeched,
The pure mayhem of this opening piece was overwhelming. It announced that you better hold onto your hats; it’s going to be. a Bumpy ride.
