Pink and Say submitted by AprilCDB on August 31, 2015, 8:00pm A powerful story about interracial friendship during the Civil War. Say, who is white and poor, tells how he is rescued by Pinkus (Pink). Pink and his mother nurse Say back to health, and Pink teaches his friend to read. The two boys are Union soldiers in Confederate territory. Eventually they are captured and Pink is hanged within hours of their capture. Say keeps the memory of Pink alive and passes the story down to younger generations. As with many of Polacco's book, this one is difficult to read aloud without crying.
Moving submitted by jcottey on August 17, 2019, 8:10pm A fictional account of one of the author's ancestors during the Civil War. Say does not want to fight in the war. He meets Pink, and the two return to Pink's home, putting his mother in danger for hiding them. It's a tearjerker.
