Crafty tourist guide Raju, meets the neglected dancer Nalini, wife of academic Marco. Raju becomes her lover and art-promoter. She becomes successful, Marco disowns his wife, and Raju achieves fortune. Everything changes when Raju commits fraud and is sent to prison. Upon his release, Raju is mistaken for a holy man, but a time comes when he has to fast in penance to bring rains to a drought-ridden village. One of India's greatest writers in the English language illuminates the human condition through small-town life.
