since you're in the area, Hercule... submitted by camelsamba on August 12, 2018, 9:50pm Amy Leatheran (an army nurse) is hired by Dr Leidner (a celebrated archaeologist) to care for his 'nervous' wife on his dig in Iraq. A murder ensues and since Hercule Poirot happens to be in the area, he is brought in to investigate.

intruiging submitted by VanCancue on August 4, 2020, 6:25pm I loved this one. Gripping mystery always feeling like you know who it is but aren't sure.

BBC radio version is a great listen.

HP refers to this story in Death of the Nile.

Very Racist submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:10pm Content Note: This book includes some racist depictions of Iraqis and Iraqi culture.

This adventure finds Hercule Poirot enmeshed in a mystery abroad, where the game is afoot at the headquarters of an archaeological dig. The mystery unfolds at a fairly nice pace with slowly emerging backstory providing the main narrative thrust, although the cast of characters is far less memorable than in the Belgian detective’s usual fare. However, the mystery pivots around an incredibly unlikely turn of events despite still remaining guessable at a relatively early stage; while some leap of faith is often required in these books, the implication here borders on the preposterous and takes away from some of Christie’s more inventive plot elements. The mode of murder and the gradual unspooling of these characters’ potential motives are interesting, as well as the unusual setting, but the conclusion ultimately makes this one of Poirot’s less interesting outings.

Suspenseful submitted by kathscot on July 13, 2023, 10:02am A good read, though of its time.
Complex characters and motivations obscure this mystery, but Poirot always triumphs.
