Bette Miller at Her Best submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:06pm Bette Midler absolutely kills it as Gypsy Rose Lee, the ultimate stage mother, in this musical, but you don’t need me to tell you that. I do wish that the songs had given a more direct accounting of the musical’s storylines, but enough is there to get the basic picture. And, anyway, so many of the songs are iconic enough in their own right that the album would function just fine as a loose collection of individual tracks; the storytelling is a nice bonus. Midler completely inhabits her character and her performance is the definite highlight: her delivery bursts with emotion and she inhabits the role so easily that it might as well have been written specifically for her. The album is not without its faults, but Midler is so enchanting that it hardly matters. This is a must for any fans of Midler, or any fans of great musical theater performances (yes, even though this was a film). I just wish the AADL had a copy of the video.
