Wonderful submitted by evelyn on July 8, 2011, 12:50pm This is one of my favorite books. The writing and charecters are phenomenal. I would also highly recommend the movie!

Delightful submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 14, 2013, 7:52pm I read this for book club, and was a little worried that it would turn out to be one of those "we should read it because it's a classic but drag your way through because it's boring" ones. I'm delighted to say that it wasn't that at all.

Certainly the lush setting of Savannah, and having been there once, didn't hurt. The cast of characters was diverse, fun, entertaining (a guy walking an imaginary dog, anyone?), and intriguing. And since I never read the book summary/jacket if I can help it, the plot was a real surprise to me.

But the two things I think I enjoyed most about the book were these: first, that it really took on the issue of race in the contemporary South. After a one page nod to the Civil Rights movement in the first chapter, I didn't expect to see anything more, and it turned out to be an integral piece of the sub-plot about the Adlers, and Chablis' commentary. And second, I don't think there was a single character in the book who turned out to be as they first appeared to be. Every SINGLE character (including the city of Savannah itself) had a wildly different hidden side from their first public appearance. Chablis set the stage for it (I think that was her role... to introduce that idea), but it was always there.

And I can't wait to get to our book club discussion of THAT!

Enjoyable! submitted by kdarlin on July 11, 2014, 10:34pm The cast of characters alone makes this book worth the read. You will not be able to put it down!

Amazing mystery and narrative of the South submitted by eapearce on November 3, 2014, 9:22am This book is unlike any other that I have read, and that is a great thing! Set in the fascinating, beautiful, mysterious Savannah, Georgia, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has a cast of characters that are completely unforgettable. My favorite part of the book was the sharp contrasts between different locations in Savannah and between the different characters described in the novel. The book begins almost as a travel log, with Berendt describing unique details about Savannah and offering interesting historical facts about the city and surrounding area to readers. I enjoyed these chapters so much that I often forgot that the book was going to turn into a true crime story. When that turning point does occur, it happens subtly and smoothly, and the book slides gracefully from a Southern narrative to a revealing look at a strange and unlikely murder mystery. More than anything, this book made me incredibly eager to plan a trip to Savannah to see for myself all the amazing places Berendt writes about so well. I would highly recommend this book to all readers!!!
